She changed something about three weeks ago and I couldn't figure out what. New haircut, I guessed. Wrong. Different lipstick, maybe. Also wrong. What I did notice is that I kept standing closer to her than I needed to, and she picked up on that way before I did.
Then we went to a cookout at my buddy's place. His wife walked straight across the yard and asked what she was wearing. She wasn't making conversation. She wanted the name, and she pulled out her phone to type it in. Two more people asked before we left.
I've been standing next to this woman for six years. Nobody had ever asked her that before.
On the drive home I finally asked. She said it was a perfume. I asked which one, bracing for a number that was going to ruin my night. She said nine dollars.
